Monday April 7, The rock of Monaco and & Eze Village (excursion half day)

The rock of Monaco

Monaco-Ville, also known locally as "le rocher" or "the rock", is one of the four quarters or districts of Monaco. Monaco-Ville is an old fortified town — some of the ramparts still remain— and is situated on a rocky promontory that extends into the Mediterranean Sea. The ancient name for Monaco-Ville is Monoecus. The colourful changing of the guard occurs every day outside the Palais at 11:55 am . Next door to the Palais is the Cathedral de Monaco, a Romanesque-Byzantine church that contains the remains of many former princes.
Despite being located in the world's most densely populated country, Monaco - Ville is still a medieval village at heart, made up almost entirely of quiet pedestrian streets and marked by virtual silence after sundown. Not to far is the Oceanographic Museum which was inaugurated in 1910 by Monaco's biggest reformator, Prince Albert I. This monumental architectural work of art has an impressive façade towering above the sea. The basement of the museum showcases a spectacular array of flora and fauna. 4000 species of fish and over 200 families of invertebrates can be seen.

Eze Village

Eze is a medieval village perched like an eagles nest on a narrow rocky peak overlooking the Mediterranean sea. The ancient fortified village is still crowned with the ruins of its 12th-century fortified castle (torn down in 1706), sitting on a narrow rocky peak.
The old buildings and narrow streets are very well restored, with high stone walls and narrow roadways of red-brick centred stone. The narrow roads wind their way upward to the well sign-posted Jardin Exotique, and from the top (429 m) you'll have an good view of the coast.

Monday April 7 - Nice City of Art – Suggestion n° 1 (excursion half day )

Nice is a major tourist centre and a leading resort on the French Riviera.

Matisse Museum

This completely renovated 17th-century Genoan-style villa in the heart of the olive grove in the Gardens of Cimiez houses the personal collection of the great Fauvist painter who lived in Nice from 1917 until his death in 1954.
Works from all periods of his life offer a comprehensive panorama: from the first paintings made in 1890 to the famous gouache cut-outs, 236 drawings, 218 engravings and the complete presentation of the books illustrated by the artist.

Arenas and termae of Cimiez

300 before Christ, the Massaliots were taking victory upon the Barbarians and were founding NIKAIA - which means "victorious" -, a commercial counter by the sea front, on the slopes of the castle.154 before Christ , the Romans built a second city, CEMENELUM, next to NIKAIA, on the hills of Cimiez. The ruins of the thermae and the arenas revealed that the city was 15000 to 20000 inhabitants big. The Roman mark on the local history may be pictured by the many remaining works.

Marc Chagall Museum

Marc Chagall is famous for his works inspired by Jewish folklore, and this museum reveals a deeply mystical poet. Chagall was born in Russia in 1887 and died near Nice at St Paul-de-Vence in 1985. Monday April 7 –Antibes & Biot (excursion full day)

Antibes

Antibes was a Greek fortified town named Antipolis in the 5th century BC, and later a Roman town, and always an active port for trading along the Mediterranean.

The natural beauty remains in the Vieille Ville (old town), with the ramparts along the sea and the long, arched protective wall along the port. There are plenty of little streets for exploring, restaurants of all types and prices, and lots of shops, from authentic little hardware/general-stores to tourist gift shops. The 16th-century Fort Carré is a massive, star-shaped fortress on a promontory overlooking the Port Vauban. The fort is built on the site of the Chapelle St. Laurent, which sat on the ruins of the Temple of Mercury.

Biot

Biot has been a source of pottery since antiquity. The region is rich in fine clays, sand, manganese and even volcanic tufa for making the kilns. Amphorae made in Biot were exported worldwide, from Antibes and Marseilles, until the 18th century. Biot is currently renowned for its glass works, typically a clear or colored transparent glass with little bubbles. There are several glassworks down the hill around the outskirts of the village, and you can watch the glass-blowing process as the pieces are made.

Fernand Léger Museum

Unquestionably one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century, Léger, nevertheless, has often been rather casually dismissed from the top hierarchy of the painters' pantheon. His bold, but limited palette, his stark contrasting compositions, his preoccupation with the aesthetics of the Machine Age, his burly self-image, his seeming lack of sophistication and subtlety all have contributed to an underplaying of Léger's important achievements.

Roquebrune – Cap Martin

"The world, one said, is a thought of God. When he created Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, the almighty must have been in a good mood. Conscious of this privilege, the inhabitants of Roquebrune have done their utmost not to break this peaceful harmony from the very beginning" Louis Nucera

The sun pours droplet's of gold on the rich vegetation, with rows of palm trees facing the sea. There is an air of elegance and refinement that one only finds in the harmony of colours and lines. Roquebrune-Cap-Martin has attracted many crowned heads and artists, ambassadors of a life style which combines recreation and finesse.

In Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, the myth is not dead, the legend is still alive. Above all, it emotion that takes precedence.

Tuesday April 8 – St Paul de Vence and Vence (excursion Full day )

St Paul de Vence & Vence

Built on its rocky outcrop and surrounded by its ramparts built on the orders of François I°, St Paul is certainly one of the most beautiful villages in Provence.

The beauty of the surrounding area, quality of life and exceptional light has inspired numerous famous artists, painters, writers and poets, some of whom took up residence in the village.

Walk around the narrow and so picturesque streets of the village, from the Porte Royale to the Porte Sud via (pedestrianised) and you will discover magnificent stone façades from the XVI° and XVIII° centuries. Lose yourself in the maze of charming streets, the floral exuberance of the gardens, the little shady squares, ancient fountains, gateways and porches, or wonderful windows and you'll see why St Paul is a favourite subject for photographers.

From the ramparts, wonderful views over the surrounding hills, the Côte d'Azur and of course the sea.

Maeght foundation

You can find signatures from some of these famous artists at the Foundation Maeght which has a large collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings and other graphic works from the XX°century.

Rosary Chapel

On the northern edge of Vence, can be found Chapelle du Rosaire, which belongs to a Dominican convent. It can be recognized by the severely linear representation of Mary, Jesus and St Dominic, by Henri Matisse, to be found over the doorway. The interior was also designed by Matisse (between 1947 and 1951) with bold graphics (black outlines on white ceramic tiles) based on Biblical themes. Kept completely white, the simple room receives colour only through its glass window. The economy of form and the drama thereby expressed are very impressive.

Wednesday April 9 The belle Epoque Villas (Excursion half day)

The Belle Epoque Villas

You can visit one of the most beautiful villas on the peninsula which is open to the public and is like a palace from "One Thousand and One Nights" : the Villa Ile de France. This mansion is decorated with the treasures of the baroness Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild. More than 5000 works of art are displayed, together with an impressive collection of furniture, lamps and carpets. The visit continues in the gardens of the villa surrounded by the sea. The Baroness Ephrussi de Rothschild was inspired by her travels to create 7 gardens designed around several themes... Spanish, Florentine or Japanese...garden of the Muses, garden of the Lapidary, the rose garden... impeccable walk-ways, palm-trees and rare fragrances surround this paradise.

One manifestation of its Belle Époque excess is the extravagant Villa Kerylos, a mansion built in 1902 in the style of classical Greece. It was the dream house of the amateur archaeologist Théodore Reinach, who commissioned an Italian architect to surround him with Grecian delights: cool Carrara marble, alabaster, rare fruitwoods, a mosaic-lined bath/pool worthy of a 1950s toga movie, and a dining room where guests draped themselves on the floor to eat à la grecque.

Wednesday April 9 On the steps of Cocteau: Menton & Villefranche
(Excursion full day)

Menton

Situated at the extreme south east of France, Menton is all at once a city of gardens, a seaport, and a beach resort. It has won the competition for the best city of flowers in France five different times. Its exceptional sunlight and the subtropical climate make Menton ideal for growing orange trees, lemon trees, palm trees, and mimosa. In the town hall, the civic wedding hall is decorated completely in murals by Jean Cocteau.

Cocteau’s Museum

Cocteau was born in Maisons-Laffitte, a small town near Paris into a prominent Parisian family. Despite his achievements in virtually all literary and artistic fields, Cocteau insisted that he was primarily a poet and that all his work was poetry. The museum is in a bastion near the port, and it displays more than 1500 works (drawings, ceramics, tapestries and a large mosaic) by the artist offered to the city of Menton by the American collector Severin Wunderman.

Cocteau ‘s Chapel – Villefranche sur Mer

This typical fishermen's village is located half way between Nice and Monaco. The chapel was built in the 14th Century. French artist Jean Cocteau painted the interior in 1957. It is one of the most celebrated Cocteau's works and, probably, the most beautiful chapel in the Côte d'Azur.
